BUSINESSDAY is Nigeria’s leading and most influential business and financial daily newspaper written by some of the country’s best journalists. It is the favourite newspaper among Nigeria’s investor community. Published every week-day plus a weekend edition on Sundays, the newspaper is based in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital BUSINESSDAY and has syndication rights to contents from the Financial Times, The Economist, Reuters and Harvard Business Review. BUSINESSDAY was launched in July 2001 and covers all major national and international news, with a specific focus on Nigeria’s economy including its business sector, companies and financial markets. The newspaper also publishes daily an influential opinion segment with several popular columnists, along with coverage of leisure, travel and entertainment. Its website showcases some of the best content inside the newspaper daily and incorporates content produced by some content partners as well. BUSINESSDAY is currently working on a partial pay-wall which will be launched for its website in the near term but at the moment access to the site and the content remains free of charge, but when readers register on the site, for free, they gain access to a range of services including newsletter subscriptions, personalised news and article clippings.

About the Role:

  • We are seeking a brilliant and analytical Economist Writer with strong quantitative skills and a passion for translating data-driven insights into clear, compelling economic analysis.
  • The ideal candidate combines economic reasoning, financial modeling expertise, and excellent writing ability to craft insightful commentaries, reports, and publications on economic and policy issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct economic and financial research on national, regional, and global trends.
  • Develop and maintain economic and financial models to support data-backed insights.
  • Write high-quality articles, reports, and analyses on topics spanning the economy, policy, business, and markets.
  • Interpret and communicate complex economic data and indicators in an accessible language.
  • Collaborate with editorial and research teams to produce thought leadership materials.
  • Monitor macroeconomic indicators, fiscal and monetary policies, and market developments.

Requirements

  • A First-Class or Strong Second-Class Upper degree in Economics, Accounting, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or any quantitative discipline.
  • Applicants must be recent graduates.
  • Strong financial modelling and valuation skills.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills — ability to simplify complex ideas.
  • Analytical thinker with a solid understanding of economic principles and trends.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; knowledge of analytical tools (R, Python, or Stata) is an advantage.
