The ideal candidate is expected to work as part of trust radio team of multimedia broadcast journalists reporting to a Team Lead and, ultimately, to Chief Operating Officer. Work will be in shifts, which may include nights, weekends, and public holidays.
This role is for a journalist with wide experience in sports reporting, with a strong grasp of the local, national, continental, and international sports scene.
The job entails originating, researching, producing, and presenting compelling and engaging sports packages, interviews, features, analyses, news stories, and background across platforms (digital, print, radio TV and other media platforms).
The multimedia sports journalist will be expected to perform the following functions:
- To specialise in sports journalism: covering matches, events, and sports news; creating compelling visual/audio content on sporting issues and building relationships with key figures in the sports industry.
- To generate, research, write, translate, edit, report, and adapt stories or programme material; to find relevant contributors or interviewees or other sources of material and/or actuality while maintaining high professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality, balance and fairness.
- To offer original ideas for sports and general news stories, programmes or series, and actively contribute to editorial processes by suggesting new angles on existing stories, proffering means of moving stories on, and putting forth ideas for stories not covered.
- To think through and around editorial problems and develop realistic alternatives.
- To perform at the microphone or before the camera with or without script, conduct interviews, chair discussions, and participate in producing content, whether pre-recorded or studio live or on location.
- To be responsible for studio production of live or pre-recorded programmes, and to respond to breaking stories on air and off.
- To use a range of audio, visual, or digital/information technology equipment to research, compile, write, verify, assemble, edit, and deliver content to the highest level of professionalism
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Strong knowledge of local and global sports, and ability to report, analyze, and present sports stories and/or commentaries across multimedia platforms.
- Excellent broadcasting voice and the ability to acquire an appropriate presentation style.
- Ability to write, edit, adapt and translate material with accuracy and to suit different audiences and media platforms.
- Keyboard/Computer skills and practical experience/extensive knowledge of the internet.
QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Degree in Journalism or Mass Communication or other related courses in social sciences and the humanities is essential
- Proven experience working as a multimedia sports journalist.
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Hausa, and the ability to communicate effectively in both languages is essential.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the media landscape in Nigeria and the way it is developing.
- Experience in covering sports, either professionally or in a freelance capacity, will be an added advantage.
