MTN Nigeria is part of the MTN Group, Africa\'s leading cellular telecommunications company. On May 16, 2001, MTN became the first GSM network to make a call following the globally lauded Nigerian GSM auction conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission earlier in the year. Thereafter the company launched full commercial operations beginning with Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. MTN paid $285m for one of four GSM licenses in Nigeria in January 2001. To date, in excess of US$1.8 billion has been invested building mobile telecommunications infrastructure in Nigeria. Since launch in August 2001, MTN has steadily deployed its services across Nigeria. It now provides services in 223 cities and towns, more than 10,000 villages and communities and a growing number of highways across the country, spanning the 36 states of the Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Many of these villages and communities are being connected to the world of telecommunications for the first time ever. The company\'s digital microwave transmission backbone, the 3,400 Kilometre Y\'elloBahn was commissioned by President Olusegun Obasanjo in January 2003 and is reputed to be the most extensive digital microwave transmission infrastructure in all of Africa. The Y\'elloBahn has significantly helped to enhance call quality on MTN network.

Description

  • Implement changes effected by the system controlling body to system maintenance procedures. 
  • Prepare and submit a monthly report to the system controlling body, of the status and details of any incidents that occurred affecting the WACS (define) segment.
  • Supervise test and installations of the cable station equipment and the submerged plant
  • Design and develop new maintenance routines for the Power Feed Equipment, 1620LM and 1678 MCC 
  • Ensure accurate interpretation of  BER (define) parameters and impairment budgets, and work with the NOC (define) and maintenance authority to ensure prompt resolution of all impairments 
  • Ensure prompt information to  the maintenance controlling body of any threat, or possibility of a threat, be it maritime or terrestrial, to the maintenance security of the system or the traffic being transported on the system
  • Confirm all scheduled system routine procedure have been carried out, and  results of the routine have been recorded in the prescribed manner
  • Provide sufficient knowledge / information  to maintain the WACS (define) system performance throughout the Network Design Life
  • Control the power feed operations necessary for the maintenance of the relevant segment (T7).what is T7
  • Control of the localization of faults in the submerged system plant within the WACS Nigeria segment (T7). 
  • Oversee the records of status and whereabouts of all spare equipment and/or equipment dispatched for repair.
  • Oversee the records of the MTN allocated, assigned, and activated capacity.
  • Implement all relevant WACS Work Group and Subcommittee obligations
  • Develop and review the WACS Joint System Maintenance Documentations (JSMD) or any other documentation as regards the management and operations of Submarine transmission within agreed deadlines.
  • Supervise and implement planned works with special attention to life affecting traffic in conjunction with submarine NOC. Network Operations Center.
  • Assign and supervise engineers conducting emergency operational procedures at odd hours in event of submarine cable cut on call-out basis.
  • Review performance of individual team members and complete appraisals in accordance with the employee performance appraisal procedures and time schedules.

Education:

  • First degree in Electrical Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications or a related discipline
  • Fluent in English

Experience:

6 - 13 years’ experience which includes:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an area of specialization; with experience in supervising/managing others
  • Experience in Telecommunication industry, with strong knowledge and specific experience using multiplexers, DWDM, SDH, Power Feed Equipment (PFE) fibre optic transmission equipment.
  • Experience in management of optical backbone and submarine cable system projects.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of the ALU 1620LM, 1678MCC and PFE
  • Demonstrate deep understanding of the design philosophy of the WACS Network down to component level, analyze segment and network performance.
  • Demonstrate high level of technical skill and understanding in the operation of the WACS network, WACS wet plant and dry plant and any other submarine cable station or capacity where MTN have interest.
