Job Description

  • We are looking for a Server L2 Unix Engineer who will be responsible for supporting, maintaining, and troubleshooting Unix server environments, with a specific focus on Solaris systems.
  • This role involves ensuring the stability, security, and performance of the Unix infrastructure and providing Level 2 support for server-related incidents.

Key Responsibilities
Unix Server Administration:

  • Manage and maintain Unix Solaris servers, ensuring high availability and system performance.
  • Perform routine server maintenance, software updates, and patching to maintain system security and stability.
  • Configure and manage server resources, including file systems, storage allocations, and network configurations.

Incident Management and Troubleshooting:

  • Provide Level 2 support for Unix (Solaris) environments, resolving escalated issues from Level 1 support.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose system errors, hardware failures, and application issues on Solaris servers.
  • Escalate critical issues to Level 3 support or external vendors when necessary.

Performance Monitoring and Optimization:

  • Monitor server performance and system logs to identify potential issues or areas for improvement.
  • Implement performance tuning and optimization techniques to ensure efficient operation of Solaris servers.
  • Utilize monitoring tools to track system health, resource utilization, and capacity planning.

Security and Compliance:

  • Ensure Unix systems meet security and compliance standards by implementing necessary access controls and security patches.
  • Conduct routine security audits and vulnerability assessments on Solaris servers.
  • Document and manage security incidents, following established protocols for incident response.

Documentation and Collaboration:

  • Document server configurations, processes, troubleshooting steps, and resolutions for future reference.
  • Work collaboratively with other IT teams, including network, storage, and application support teams, to support cross-functional initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders regarding system status, planned maintenance, and incidents.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in Unix server administration, specifically with Solaris systems, with at least 1-2 years in an L2 support role.
  • Certifications: Solaris certification or equivalent Unix certifications are a plus.

Skills and Competencies:
Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency with Unix operating systems, especially Solaris.
  • Strong knowledge of Unix shell scripting (e.g., Bash, KornShell) for automation and task management.
  • Experience with Solaris Zones, Logical Domains (LDOMs), and other Solaris virtualization technologies.
  • Familiarity with server monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix) and logging systems.
  • Understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, NFS) and basic networking concepts.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with both technical and non-technical team members.
  • Detail-oriented with solid organizational skills to manage documentation and prioritize tasks effectively.
