A product designer is responsible for the user experience of a product, usually taking direction on the business goals and objectives from product management. Although typically associated with the visual/tactile aspects of a product, product designers can sometimes also play a role in the information architecture and system design of a product as well.
A product designer may also be referred to as a User Experience Designer, Customer Experience Architect, User Interface Designer, Interaction Designer, or Information Architect depending on the type of company, the size, and diversity of the design department and the particular individual’s area of expertise.
Creating mockups, wireframes and prototypes of products.
Establish design requirements.
Develop user journey maps.
Collaborate with engineering and development teams to bring products to market.
Conduct A/B testing and gather user feedback.
Conduct functionality testing.
Research potential new products, materials and tools.
Sketching design ideas
Researching building and design materials to understand their usefulness
Ideating on design efficiency to determine if there's a better way to make a product
Researching style trends like color palettes, prints and other aesthetic component
Testing products for functionality and ease of use
Researching audience members' wants and needs from new or existing products
Collecting feedback from stakeholders, team members and the audience to learn more about their expectations and needs.
Writing and sending email surveys to collect feedback
Running or auditing focus groups with audience members throughout the design process
Developing benchmarks, goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) for product success
Adjusting project goals to better fit timelines or design expectations
An understanding of UX and UI principles.
Extensive experience with CAD.
Ability to approach projects with a big-picture perspective.
Ability to understand business needs and translate them into design for products.
Receptive to feedback from users and fellow designers.
